Grapes

Dr. Grape's ultimate guide to Portuguese grape varieties.

Everything you always wanted to know about Portuguese grape varieties, but were afraid to ask...

The diversity of grape varieties in Portugal is incredible, especially considering the relatively small area under vine. There are over 250 native grape varieties, many international ones increasingly being vinified here, and very successfully. The almost infinite choice of varietals, along with the differentiating terroir, results in fabulously versatile wines that are just getting better and better. Here we have included some of the main varieties you are most likely to come across, as you will see some with amusing names. Many of Portuguese wine varieties are know by several names, depending on the region they’re grown. João de Santarém is the same as Periquita, which is the same as Castelão. Likewise, Aragonez is Tinta Roriz. Never heard about it? How about tempranillo? Well, they’re all the same. Anyway, it is a lot of grape variety, so don’t feel bad it you don’t know them all by heart. In this section, you will be able to learn a little more about some of the most relevant grapes when it comes to producing Portuguese wine.

Who We Are

Dr Grape is a project that was born out of a common interest by two friends. One being a son of the Shropshire Hills, the other being proudly from the Almada region of Lisbon. Both met for the first time in Luanda, Angola in 2001. They share many common interests, one being wine and good food.

Since we started Dr Grape, we’ve been working to explore and expand our product offerings to make our customer experience the best we can.  We’re happy how far we’ve come, yet remain committed to growing the company and taking it from a true start-up, to a viable, strong brand throughout the UK.

Our collections are carefully selected. Delivery options and payment methods generous and flexible. Browse through our product gallery and experience shopping with Dr Grape for yourself. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions, comments or suggestions.
